You must use the scroll before attempting the upgrade, and the scroll is consumed whether the upgrade is a success or a failure. It is only necessary to use a Scroll of AProtect when upgrading an accessory to +4 and beyond.
• Protection for upgrading weapons and armor requires using the Scroll of SProtect.
